Another Unique Day in Paradise

Sonja

Today I would like to share with you a very unique experience we had with a nile crocodile in the Kruger National Park not very long ago. But let me start at the beginning... We were staying at Lower Sabie Rest Camp so early one morning as the gates opened we were on our way for our morning drive to see what great sightings and photo opportunities our beloved Kruger Park had to offer. [That is the best tip I can give you when going to Kruger - there is NO time for sleeping late if you want to take amazing photos of these majestic wild animals.] So we made our way towards Skukuza, taking a slow drive alongside the beautiful river road (H4-1). We had a great drive up to the high water bridge of the H12 as we took these beautiful photos of a Black-bellied Bustard and Spotted Hyaena.

The high water bridge of the H12 is also one of our favourite spots. We always stop there for a while to have a coffee or just to sit and have a peaceful moment in nature. You can see for miles both ways as it runs right accross the Sabie River (please note you are not allowed outside your vehicle on that bridge). This specific morning, while sitting on the bridge we noticed a big comotion in the water. It was a nile crocodile that had just caught something.

Thinking it was a fish we kept a close watch on it as it swam closer to shore. At first we thought it was a huge catfish, but much to our surprise it was a massive freshwater eel. We quickly repositioned our vehicle to capture the event on camera. It struggled with the eel for a while, standing up out of the water shaking its head profusely on a few occasions before it managed to bite a piece off which it could swallow.

Once all was done it slowly reversed back into the water again and swam off. The full video is available to view on Youtube.

It really was something spectacular to see. We immediately posted some photos on our Facebook Page which quickly led to a phone call from the local newspaper asking our permission to make use of our photos and publish an article surrounding the event. So, very proud and humbled we made the front pages of the Beeld and the Daily News newspapers with our Nile Crocodile sighting.

All the Glory to our Creator who is giving us wildlife experiences in excess (inXS)!
